John W. Boys Smith, MD

Founder of Boys Smith Vision Center

Dr. John W. Boys Smith, MD Dr. Boys Smith was a board certified ophthalmologist and surgeon who was well-known for accurately diagnosing and treating the most difficult patient cases. He was a fellowship trained glaucoma specialist with several years of university teaching and research experience in glaucoma.

Dr. Boys Smith was born in Cambridge, England. He received his B.A. degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge with an emphasis in zoology, botany and mathematics. He went on to study medicine and received his M.A. and M.D. degrees at Cambridge. Dr. Boys Smith interned under Mr. Ridley, inventor of the first intraocular lens implants, and in internal medicine. He also worked in neurology and neurosurgery. He received his residency training in ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and completed his fellowship in glaucoma at Emory University, Atlanta. During his lifetime, Dr. Boys Smith invented several medical devices for ophthalmology and was published regularly in leading peer-reviewed journals.

Before establishing his practice in Ellensburg, Dr. Boys Smith spent time in Cali, Colombia on a European Assistance Program and set up the first group practice in the south of the country. During his tenure there, he introduced American standards of ophthalmology in a private setting and taught at the University of Cali, Colombia, becoming fluent in Spanish. After moving to the United States, he taught glaucoma at Tulane University School of Medicine, and was head of the Department of Ophthalmology in Marshfield Clinic, Wisconsin.

As founder of Boys Smith Vision Center, Dr. Boys Smith was a leading force in pioneering comprehensive ophthalmology care in Central Washington. He laid the groundwork for developing a model that optimized ophthalmology eye care for rural communities. His vision was to successfully apply this model of dispensing ophthalmology in rural settings across the nation, helping to strengthen the role of ophthalmology and providing Eye MDs with a successful approach to practicing in rural settings.

Dr. Boys Smith dedicated himself to serving his patients with a passion for practicing the art of medicine with utmost precision while taking advantage of advances in medicine and eye care technology. His vision and legacy continues at Boys Smith Vision Center.
